Linked Open Data intelligence and technology in the development of strategic information systems for the food industry.

Objective

The project focuses on experimental R&D on the Open Data and Linked Open Data paradigm, with the general objective (GO) of designing new computing algorithms capable of identifying, capturing and extracting valuable information from the Open Data catalogues of the Valencian Community, the Government of Spain and the European Union, contextualising it according to the semantic structure of the business fabric of the VC, and thus providing an information and knowledge management model that characterises the essential aspects of the food value chain with renewed, wide-ranging and high strategic value information.

To this end, the project will articulate the following

specific objectives

:

  • Analysis and determination of a standardised semantic structure for the characterisation of the agri-food industry aligned with the Open Data model. This structure represents the conceptual basis on which to establish the open data information resources selected for their strategic value and deployed in the final prototype.
  • Study, analysis and computer implementation of the computing algorithms and query models for the existing Open Data catalogues at regional, national and European level. This is a critical objective in the development of the project; during the drafting of this report, the number of existing datasets on the open data portal of the Generalitat Valenciana, Government of Spain and European Union amounted to 42,893. A figure of such magnitude can only be analysed through information technologies expressly enabled for this purpose, which is why the priority objective of the project is to design the computing algorithms and models necessary to achieve this goal.
  • Identification, analysis and selection of Open Data datasets of strategic interest in the framework of improving the competitiveness of the food industry. Understanding the type of information handled by the different datasets present in each of the open data sources analysed will allow us to identify resources of high strategic value for organisations. At this point, the vision of the companies that will collaborate in the project is essential to discriminate information according to different degrees of relevance (1-not relevant, 2-of relative interest, 3-useful, 4-important, 5-strategic). Similarly, a study of the different datasets will be carried out to classify them according to their accessibility using the 5-star scheme of Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the web and creator of the Linked Open Data movement
  • Analysis of interrelationships between datasets (Linked Open Data) for the implementation of cross-referenced information of high strategic value.
  • Development of the web architecture and infrastructure for the storage, classification, indexing and visualisation of the information obtained, based on usability standards recognised by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium). The open data information access platform constitutes the application prototype for the information and knowledge management described in the general objective. Developed based on RWD standards, it will provide a powerful open data query model, as well as a visualisation of the interrelationships between them aimed at improving the understanding of the essential elements of the food value chain.
  • Proofs of concept and prototype testing with companies in the sector. This objective focuses on validating the prototype with agri-food companies in order to verify its adaptation to the strategic issues of each of them. The vision of the business fabric within the framework of the project is critical and will play a key role in its development.
  • Communication, dissemination and transfer of results to the business fabric. The project will have a communication, dissemination and transfer plan designed to publicise the development of the project during its initial phases, the sources of funding, objectives and expected results, in order to generate expectations in the productive sector, and with dissemination and transfer actions for the results at its completion, in which we will once again involve the companies that make up the agri-food business fabric of the Valencian Community.

Results obtained

  • Study of the standardised semantic structure for the characterisation of companies in the agri-food sector of the Valencian Community.
  • Analysis of computing algorithms for querying and accessing existing Open Data catalogues at regional, national and European level.
  • Evaluation of Open Data datasets of strategic interest and analysis of the links between them (Linked Open Data).
  • Web prototype for the storage, classification, indexing and visualisation of the open data information obtained.
