Analytical determination and characterisation of PFAS in food, water and food contact materials

Generation of analytical evidence for the detection, quantification and technical interpretation of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the food chain.

PFAS: an analytical challenge for the control of persistent contaminants

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) constitute a broad group of persistent compounds with high chemical stability and bioaccumulation potential, which can enter the food chain through multiple pathways, such as water, the environment, industrial processes or food contact materials. Growing regulatory and scientific interest in these contaminants, together with their detection in various food matrices, has highlighted several challenges for the industry:

  • The analytical complexity associated with their chemical nature and the very low levels at which they may be present.
  • The coexistence of multiple PFAS compounds, which are not always included in routine controls.
  • The need to interpret results within a technical context that supports internal risk management.
Conventional analytical approaches are insufficient for adequate PFAS characterisation, creating technical uncertainty in decision-making and the definition of control strategies.

Our solution

Detection and quantification of PFAS

AINIA offers a specialised technical service for the detection and analytical determination of PFAS, aimed at providing reliable, contextualised information to support technical management by operators.

The service designs and carries out analytical studies aimed at detecting and quantifying PFAS in different matrices relevant to the food sector.

Advanced analytical techniques at trace levels

Applies advanced analytical techniques suitable for the determination of these compounds at trace levels.

Technical interpretation and management support

Interprets the results from a technical perspective, considering their relevance to food safety and internal control.
The information generated is used as technical evidence to support diagnostic, monitoring, verification or action prioritisation processes.
