ELDRIN II

Development of Innovative Resources and New Sustainable Materials II.
1 July, 2025

Objective

The general objective of ELDRIN II is to research and develop new pretreatments for the fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) for its valorisation, as well as to explore advanced methods for recycling complex lignocellulosic waste (textiles, filters, etc.), with the aim of obtaining high added-value products and contributing to sustainability and the circular economy.

Activities

  1. Innovative pretreatments for the fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass.
  2. Recycling of complex lignocellulosic waste.
  3. Bio-based adhesives using lignocellulosic materials.
  4. Production of bioethanol from biomass.
  5. Communication and dissemination.
  6. Technology transfer
  7. Management and coordination

Results:

  • Potential and challenges of lignocellulosic biomass: the use of lignocellulosic agricultural and industrial waste as a raw material to obtain new biochemicals and biomaterials through more selective and sustainable processes.
  • Advanced fractionation technologies: study of twin-screw extrusion, in collaboration with CLEXTRAL, as an intensified technology for the continuous and efficient pretreatment of biomass.
  • Lignin valorisation in bioadhesives: development of 100 % bio-based hot-melt adhesives, with the support of GUEROLA and CARTONAJES LA PLANA, for paper and cardboard applications.
  • Chemical recycling of complex waste: conversion of lignocellulosic and industrial waste into 5-chloromethylfurfural (CMF), a stable, high-value-added platform compound.
  • Future applications and commitment to sustainability: promotion of new biorefinery and chemical recycling solutions that support a more circular and efficient industry with a lower environmental impact.
