Development of innovative resources and new sustainable materials

Objective

The overall objective of ELDRIN is based on exploring the concept of an integrated biorefinery for lignocellulosic materials, ranging from the development of new cellulose fractionation and extraction methods using more sustainable and efficient processes from lignocellulosic biomass and waste, to the definition of innovative processes for obtaining micro/nanocellulose (MNC) and nanolignins, as well as innovation in unit operations, e.g. drying, modification, etc., required so that the different lignocellulosic materials can be used in high added-value applications, i.e. paper packaging and 3D bioprinting.

  3. Application, validation and end-of-life of solutions based on MNC and nanolignin
  4. Legal advice on the use of MNC from biomass in materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

Results

  • Processes for the extraction of cellulose and lignin from agri-food waste and by-products, which are more efficient and sustainable.
  • Advanced methods for obtaining micro/nano derivatives of celluloses and (nano)lignins.
  • New methods for the efficient and scalable drying of MNFC by atomisation.
  • New methods for the physicochemical modification of celluloses for use in paper packaging and 3D bioprinting. Recyclability assessment.
  • Knowledge of the regulatory framework applicable to obtaining MNC from by-products and their use as a food contact material.
