Industrial biotechnology is emerging as one of the key solutions, offering both sustainability and production efficiency. Within this field, <strong data-start=\"628\" data-end=\"644\">biofactories<\/strong> are attracting increasing attention from industry players.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 data-start=\"710\" data-end=\"774\"><strong data-start=\"714\" data-end=\"774\">Why Biofactories Matter in Today\u2019s Competitive Landscape<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"776\" data-end=\"1123\">Biofactories refer to organisms that have the natural or engineered ability to produce <strong data-start=\"863\" data-end=\"887\">biological molecules<\/strong> of industrial interest at high yields. These molecules may include plant growth regulators, pharmaceutical active ingredients, bioactive compounds for functional foods, cosmetic actives, biopreservatives, or biomaterials, among others.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1125\" data-end=\"1672\">Many of these biological molecules are currently produced from fossil sources (such as polymeric materials, surfactants, or other industrial substances) or require large amounts of raw materials for their extraction (as is the case with certain flavourings and bioactive compounds). Additionally, some are derived from sources that raise ethical or environmental concerns. In these scenarios, biofactory-based organisms provide a sustainable, cost-effective, and <strong>environmentally friendly alternative for producing key<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"1647\" data-end=\"1671\">biological molecules<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1674\" data-end=\"1905\">In some cases, the goal is not merely to replace an existing molecule but to develop completely new functionalities\u2014such as innovative pharmaceutical or cosmetic active ingredients produced through mammalian or plant cell cultures.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1912\" data-end=\"1964\"><strong data-start=\"1916\" data-end=\"1964\">How Biofactories Work and Their Key Benefits<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1966\" data-end=\"2300\">In most cases, the production platform involves microorganisms or cell cultures grown in bioreactors containing carefully designed nutrient media. Once the production process is complete, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ainia.com\/en\/technological-services\/industrial-production\/altex\/co2-supercritical-extraction-and-separation\/\"><strong>separation and purification steps<\/strong><\/a> are carried out to isolate the desired biological molecules under optimal conditions for their intended use.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2302\" data-end=\"2629\">The core of this process is the<strong> microorganism or cell line used as the biofactory<\/strong>. While certain microorganisms naturally produce specific molecules, in many cases, production levels are too low, or the molecule is not produced at all. Here, genetic engineering becomes essential to achieve efficient and sustainable production.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2631\" data-end=\"2944\">This process involves the use of specialised tools, known as \u201cexpression vectors\u201d and \u201cgenetic parts\u201d, which are used to genetically modify the biofactory organism. The quality and precision of these genetic tools largely determine the efficiency of both the development phase and the subsequent production process.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"272\" data-end=\"870\">Once the target biological molecules are obtained through biofactories, it becomes essential to select purification and extraction processes that preserve the integrity of these compounds, especially when dealing with sensitive or bioactive substances. Among the most effective technologies in this context is <strong data-start=\"582\" data-end=\"614\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ainia.com\/en\/technological-services\/industrial-production\/altex\/co2-supercritical-extraction-and-separation\/\">supercritical CO\u2082 extraction<\/a>, <\/strong>a<strong> versatile and environmentally friendly solution<\/strong> that enables the isolation and concentration of functional ingredients without the use of organic solvents, ensuring the preservation of the bioactive properties of molecules produced through biofactories.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"875\" data-end=\"1138\">This synergy between bioproduction and advanced separation technologies opens new possibilities for developing high-purity, sustainable ingredients for food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical applications, facilitating the creation of innovative, high-value products.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2951\" data-end=\"3010\"><strong data-start=\"2955\" data-end=\"3010\">Advanced Genetic Engineering Tools for Biofactories<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3012\" data-end=\"3455\">Within the framework of initiatives funded by <strong>IVACE (Valencian Institute for Business Competitiveness)<\/strong> under its collaboration with AINIA to support industrial R&amp;D activities, we are developing new genetic engineering tools to design genes for producing various proteins and even complete metabolic pathways. Su tesis doctoral se centr\u00f3 en la producci\u00f3n de anticuerpos en plataformas vegetales para aplicaciones de inmunoterapia oral pasiva, combinando biotecnolog\u00eda vegetal, expresi\u00f3n recombinante y aplicaciones biom\u00e9dicas. Tras el doctorado, realiz\u00f3 un primer posdoctorado en B\u00e9lgica en el VIB (Plant Systems Biology, Universidad de Gante), financiado mediante una beca posdoctoral FWO belga competitiva, donde trabaj\u00f3 en ingenier\u00eda gen\u00e9tica de plantas y en el desarrollo de vacunas orales. Posteriormente, obtuvo una beca Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie de la Comisi\u00f3n Europea, con la que continu\u00f3 su etapa posdoctoral enfoc\u00e1ndose en el dise\u00f1o de anticuerpos y su producci\u00f3n en plataformas vegetales como complemento alimentario para nutrici\u00f3n animal. Despu\u00e9s de una etapa en Grimstad (sur de Noruega) por motivos de reunificaci\u00f3n familiar, regres\u00f3 a Valencia para incorporarse al CSIC como investigadora posdoctoral, donde trabaj\u00f3 en edici\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica de plantas. Tras su etapa acad\u00e9mica, se incorpor\u00f3 a AINIA, en el departamento de Microbiolog\u00eda y Biotecnolog\u00eda Industrial, donde particip\u00f3 activamente en la creaci\u00f3n y consolidaci\u00f3n del laboratorio de biolog\u00eda molecular e ingenier\u00eda gen\u00e9tica, contribuyendo al impulso estrat\u00e9gico de esta l\u00ednea dentro del centro. Despu\u00e9s de cinco a\u00f1os en este departamento, pas\u00f3 a formar parte de la Unidad de Innovaci\u00f3n, donde actualmente ejerce como l\u00edder y gestora de proyectos europeos, con un fuerte enfoque en biotecnolog\u00eda, transferencia de tecnolog\u00eda e innovaci\u00f3n Biotecnolog\u00eda Molecular y Celular de Plantas por la Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Valencia. Su tesis doctoral se centr\u00f3 en la producci\u00f3n de anticuerpos en plataformas vegetales para aplicaciones de inmunoterapia oral pasiva, combinando biotecnolog\u00eda vegetal, expresi\u00f3n recombinante y aplicaciones biom\u00e9dicas. Tras el doctorado, realiz\u00f3 un primer posdoctorado en B\u00e9lgica en el VIB (Plant Systems Biology, Universidad de Gante), financiado mediante una beca posdoctoral FWO belga competitiva, donde trabaj\u00f3 en ingenier\u00eda gen\u00e9tica de plantas y en el desarrollo de vacunas orales. Posteriormente, obtuvo una beca Marie Sk\u0142odowska-Curie de la Comisi\u00f3n Europea, con la que continu\u00f3 su etapa posdoctoral enfoc\u00e1ndose en el dise\u00f1o de anticuerpos y su producci\u00f3n en plataformas vegetales como complemento alimentario para nutrici\u00f3n animal. Despu\u00e9s de una etapa en Grimstad (sur de Noruega) por motivos de reunificaci\u00f3n familiar, regres\u00f3 a Valencia para incorporarse al CSIC como investigadora posdoctoral, donde trabaj\u00f3 en edici\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica de plantas. Tras su etapa acad\u00e9mica, se incorpor\u00f3 a AINIA, en el departamento de Microbiolog\u00eda y Biotecnolog\u00eda Industrial, donde particip\u00f3 activamente en la creaci\u00f3n y consolidaci\u00f3n del laboratorio de biolog\u00eda molecular e ingenier\u00eda gen\u00e9tica, contribuyendo al impulso estrat\u00e9gico de esta l\u00ednea dentro del centro.
