The importance of water as an essential resource for the development and survival of living beings is beyond debate, making it an increasingly scarce and depleted resource, as well as unequally distributed, as can be seen in areas affected by water stress, which are significantly increasing in Spain. Thus, the demand for drinking water continues to rise, intrinsically linked to population growth, economic development, ecological degradation, and, of course, consumption patterns.<\/p>\n<h2>New regulations for more efficient treatment and control of wastewater streams<\/h2>\n<p>As one of the actions to address this issue, the revision of Directive 91\/271\/EEC on the treatment of urban wastewater (<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=OJ:C_202401204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amendments approved by the European Parliament on October 5, 2023, on the proposal for a Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the treatment of urban wastewater (consolidated version) (COM(2022)0541 \u2014 C9-6363\/2022 \u2014 2022\/0345(COD)) (europa.eu)<\/a>) aims to introduce <strong>new standards for more efficient treatment and control of wastewater streams<\/strong>, thus moving closer to the objectives defined by the European Union for Zero Pollution. Therefore, it can be considered that this revision updates the Directive by expanding its scope and application, <strong>highlighting the involvement of the water cycle sector and wastewater treatment as significant actors in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and defining a timeframe for the sector to achieve energy neutrality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Expansion of producer responsibility in wastewater treatment<\/h2>\n<p>This, in turn, would lead to an <strong>expansion of the producer responsibility regime, further involving these stakeholders in wastewater treatment, thereby encouraging a more equitable contribution to wastewater treatment from the most polluting sectors<\/strong> (both in terms of volume and pollutant load) to ensure high-quality treated water that is useful for restoring receiving environments or reusing such treated water (as indicated, for example, in EU Regulation 2020\/741 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 May 2020 on minimum requirements for water reuse).<\/p>\n<p>Among the various proposed modifications are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mandatory introduction of secondary (biological), tertiary (nitrogen and phosphorus removal), and quaternary (broad spectrum of microcontaminant removal) treatments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Extending the \u201cpolluter pays\u201d<\/strong> principle to require pharmaceutical and cosmetic producers (while not exempting other industries such as textiles or chemicals) to bear at least 80% of the costs associated with these additional treatments (as they are primarily aimed at contaminants generated in their industrial activity), allowing some flexibility in covering the remaining costs.<\/li>\n<li>This also includes charges related to the <strong>costs of collection, management, and data verification on products introduced to the market<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Organic microcontaminants: a major environmental problem<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"270\" data-end=\"962\">It is essential to pay close attention to<strong> organic microcontaminants.<\/strong> These substances, mostly of synthetic origin, were developed to improve human health standards and drive economic development. Among these microcontaminants are pharmaceuticals, cosmetic products, surfactants\/detergents, pesticides\/fungicides, disinfection by-products, and chemical fertilizers, among others.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"270\" data-end=\"962\">Many of these substances, particularly those used in <strong>agriculture and industry<\/strong>, are now the focus of new technological approaches aimed at reducing their uncontrolled spread in the environment. These strategies focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ainia.com\/en\/microencapsulation\/\"><strong>controlled-release solutions and better stability management<\/strong><\/a> to minimize environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"964\" data-end=\"1217\">These microcontaminants are clearly identified in the sectors mentioned above, not only through direct measurements but also via indirect or substitute indicators that clearly point to their presence and, therefore, highlight the need for their control.<\/p>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-167854\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ainia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/microcontaminantes-agua-1536x426-1-300x83.jpg\" alt=\"microcontaminants in wastewater\" width=\"708\" height=\"196\"><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Innovative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and textile industries<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In this regard, AINIA collaborates with companies in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and textile industries to implement innovative solutions aimed at reducing the environmental impact of their activities, especially in terms of energy, water, and overall environmental footprints. Various projected and executed actions in these sectors include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increasing the efficiency of production and cleaning processes through the introduction of well-established technologies (e.g., microencapsulation).<\/li>\n<li>Digitalization of processes or the development of value-added compounds for the creation of new products.<\/li>\n<li>Optimizing and improving cleanability in equipment, facilities, and processes.<\/li>\n<li>Minimizing water consumption through recycling and internal water recirculation.<\/li>\n<li>Implementing<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ainia.com\/en\/rdi-programme\/green-transition\/zero-pollution\/wastewater-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> plans for the treatment, regeneration, and reuse of industrial water<\/a> (internal to the company) in accordance with current legislation and recommendations included in sector-specific MTDs and BATs Guides.<\/li>\n<li>Introducing comprehensive waste valorization for both liquid and solid waste through the concept of biorefinery\/biofactory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div><\/body><\/html>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Water is a public good, belonging to everyone and for everyone. Adem\u00e1s, posee experiencia docente en la UPV, donde ha codirigido 10 Trabajos Fin de Grado y Fin de M\u00e1ster. Actualmente desarrolla su labor en la Unidad de Innovaci\u00f3n de AINIA, enfocado especialmente en la proyecci\u00f3n, redacci\u00f3n, gesti\u00f3n y direcci\u00f3n de proyectos a nivel regional, nacional y europeo en \u00e1reas relacionadas, principalmente, con recursos h\u00eddricos, medioambiente, soluciones basadas en la naturaleza, econom\u00eda circular y bioeconom\u00eda. Actualmente desarrolla su labor en la Unidad de Innovaci\u00f3n de AINIA, enfocado especialmente en la proyecci\u00f3n, redacci\u00f3n, gesti\u00f3n y direcci\u00f3n de proyectos a nivel regional, nacional y europeo en \u00e1reas relacionadas, principalmente, con recursos h\u00eddricos, medioambiente, soluciones basadas en la naturaleza, econom\u00eda circular y bioeconom\u00eda.
